His mastery of technique is all the more remarkable because he is entirely self-taught and works from images in his mind, not from reference photographs. Gary, a member of the Cree Nation, grew up near the northern community of Pinehouse Lake, Saskatchewan where his family lives off the land, hunting, trapping and fishing. This intimate knowledge of the beauty of Canada's north shines through every brush stroke in a way that could never be learned from books.
